Coming from the land of Volvo, Saab Automobile of Sweden is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the General Motors Corporation. Its direct competitors include such automobile legends as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. Saab holds the unique prestige of being the exclusive automobile Royal Warrant Holder appointed by the King of Sweden.
The name Saab is an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (Swedish Aeroplane Company), and the word “SAAB” uses all-capitals when used within the corporate emblem and on-vehicle badging. However, the current official format, when using the name in print, is “Saab,” and not “SAAB.” Like other brands such as Volvo, Acura, Lexus and Toyota, Saab is now treated as a proper name and not as an acronym, despite its origins.
