The Mercury brand of automobile is owned by the Ford Motor Company. The company positioned the vehicle between the other Ford regular models and the luxury models of Lincoln. So mercury was a entry level luxury automobile. In a way this positioning is much the same as the Chrysler and the Buick brands.
Though it was doing well to start with, but the sales began to fall soon. This led many industry observers have question whether Mercury will survive in the long term. However Ford insists that there is no intention of letting the brand die. But in October 2006 the Mercury brand was being examined for possible elimination. But the Mercury automobile continues to perform. J.D. Power and Associates announced in August of 2007 that the Mercury line of vehicles had placed fifth in Overall Dependability Ratings.
